About Us
St John the Baptist Church Shedfield
During the COVID-19 pandemic the church is open for private prayer from 10:00am until 4:00pm daily except for Sunday, when it is open from 12:00pm until 4:00pm.
A Sunday morning service with music and an address is held at either st John the Baptist Church or our sister church, St Nicholas, Wickham (PO17 6HP). The service starts at 10:00am. Please check the Being Church At Home page and/or A Church Near You www.achurchnearyou.com for the latest information. The wearing of face coverings is strongly recommended and please remember to use the hand sanitising station on entry and on exit. If you have any symptoms of COVID-19, however mild, you should self-isolate and not come to church.
There is disabled parking in church driveway in front of St John the Baptist, via St Johns Lane and Church Road. A level path to the left of the main door leads to the west entrance of the Study Centre with access to the church.
There is an inductive loop system for those with hearing aids.
We have a disabled toilet in the Study Centre.
The bell-ringing chamber is reached by a spiral staircase and is not suitable for people with restricted mobility.
The church’s foundation stone was laid on 24 May 1875, and can be seen today under the east window. Several coins of the day were buried nearby. The building committee was headed by the Vicar, the Revd William Bray.
The church is Gothic in style, with a nave, north and south aisles and a decorative and ornate chancel. Coloured bricks are used abundantly and the dressed Bath stone gives a warm and pleasing effect.
The embroidery displayed on the north wall was created by members of the parish to celebrate the millennium.
The most recent addition to the church is the Study Centre. It was designed by Terry E. Roberts, built by local company H H Builders of Bishop’s Waltham, and dedicated by the Bishop of Portsmouth in September 2003.
